La Fine di Nettuno

Image
Spatial Concept ‘Waiting,’ Lucio Fontana (1960)       So I was looking at artwork from Lucio Fontana, as one does, when I came across this series of paintings called  La Fine di Dio (The End of God.) Lucio Fontana's whole deal is that he pierces holes into the canvases that he works on. "My greatest discovery is the hole," he says. That is a direct quote, I'm being serious. Some of his works consist almost only of pierced canvases. There's the quintessential "Waiting" which is a canvas that has been slashed one time, with a black fabric behind it, giving it the appearance of being a void.     He has some higher concept works too, La Fine di Dio being one of them. The canvases are more uniquely shaped, being sort of egg-like instead of rectangles. The colors are bold, and the size and arrangement of the pierced holes seem more deliberate, as if to create a pattern. They were made in 1964.      Now, my more serious interpretation of the work...

Fake Advertising

Image
It's not uncommon for small-time vendors and food stands and stuff to have branding that is cobbled together from random sources. So you'll have a carwash or a pizzeria that has a photoshopped Mario as its mascot. I find this phenomenon to be charming, I think we end up with off-brand versions of characters that look bad in a really funny way.      Some while ago I stumbled upon this ice cream shop that had a sign with the seven dwarves on it. It was the Disney version of the dwarves, based on the 1937 designs for them. But there was something else about them. They looked like 3D models, and something about the colors and the lighting looked very familiar. After looking at them for a few seconds, I clocked them as being renders from Kingdom Hearts, Birth by Sleep to be specific. Recreated from memory      That was a couple years ago, in the summer of 2023. Last summer, in 2025, I was walking past another ice cream vendor when I looked at their...

Mice Hice

Image
For each of the past three days I happened to watch a movie that had the house of a mouse in it.  This happened out of complete coincidence, it wasn't intentional at all. I, and lots of others, have this idyllic idea of a mouse house where the mice sleep in tin cans or match boxes, and they slice a strawberry as if it were a piece of ham, but I couldn't have pointed out any specific examples. That was, until 3 days ago.     The first of these houses was in Disney's Robin Hood. They have an old, patched up shoe that has been fashioned into a bed for two. They have a big (or rather, regular sized) candle next to their bed. Several small knick knacks are laid about in their house, like a thread spool, a thimble, and a wine cork. I think the house was inside a church, so maybe the cork is from communion wine? And they have a carpet made of straw, that has been patched up with a blue fabric. And some tiny coat hangers.     The second house was in ...

Everyone is So Well-Dressed in Dodie's Tiny Desk Concert

Image
In general I feel like there is just such cohesion between everyone's outfits. It's all very earthy tonesy, with everyone wearing these nice browns and greens and beiges.     There's some blue too (she's not gonna dye her hair just for this video) and the collar of her sweater is also blue which matches nicely. Dodie herself is wearing this floral dress and what seems to be a corset. In her vlog " the secret to my wardrobe" she explains that she likes to get dresses from vintage shops and vintage fairs and pairing them with a corset. So, this one is most likely also a vintage dress.     The drummer is wearing this nice dark green overshirt. The three backing vocalists have these deep browns and are matching very well. The bassist looks super cool and has this cream shirt and dark green pants and socks. One of the violinists has this nice beige knit sweater that just looks so cozy. Orla Gartland is wearing this brown top and cream colored pants wi...

Just One of Those Days (Where Hemme Dies)

Image
I saw One of Those Days When Hemme Dies almost exactly a year ago. I knew nothing about it going in, except for the fact that it has an absolutely baller poster. This is how I decide what films to see sometimes.     I have a lot of thoughts about the film. It's a very non-standard film, it does not follow a conventional story structure. There is a lot about it that holds symbolic meaning, that I had my interpretations on while watching. It's a film that lets moments breathe a lot, making it very atmospheric. It's also visually stunning. I liked it a lot, it was one of the best films I saw in 2025.     So, the protagonist is a man named Eyüp. Eyüp as a given name is the Islamic counterpart to Job in the Bible. As a religious figure, Job is a man known for his patience through hardships and having to endure a lot. This is fitting, because Eyüp's patience is tested a LOT in this film. All of the difficulties in his life are revealed slowly and ...

Watched Ivanhoe Today

Image
Watched Ivanhoe (1952) today. It had been on my watchlist for some time now. I had seen The Knights of the Round Table a little over a year ago, which is like the spiritual sequel to this film. Ivanhoe did have a lot of what I look for in this sort of romantic adventure film. Lots of very nice looking costumes, picturesque shots of castles and nature, nicely decorated medieval interiors. The spectacle of swordfights and jousting and archery. It's a pretty looking film, I ended up taking a lot of screenshots.      I'd say the main theme that this film tackles is religious discrimination. Not very deeply explored, but there's something . I liked the acting a lot, though I had trouble understanding some of it. Sometimes it felt like they were just mumbling stuff. And the dialogue was written very wittily, some lines were very funny.  Also, Robin Hood is in this film. They don't call him that, though, he's called Locksley (which is apparently...

Fashionable Futurism

Image
While browsing the internet I heard of the term "gadgetpunk." This didn't happen recently, it was like 3 years ago. It's an aesthetic where people have futuristic gadgets on them, which are  often bulky and sometimes wearable. And also accessories like goggles, gloves, charms. Some examples include DragonBall, Digimon, and early Pokémon.     You could also count some stuff from Sonic the Hedgehog in this. Most of all, the human Sonic from Tokyo Game Show. There's actually lore to this image. All of the gadgets on him are supposed to symbolize the interconnectivity that the artist foresees will take hold in gaming. This is from 2001 where online gaming was not as popular as it is today.      This one outfit of Knuckles might also count. Also, fun fact: If you try to find images of knuckles (as in the body part on your hands) on Google, the results will be dominated by Knuckles the Echidna. If you try to be more specific and search "human...

Impeccable Aesthetics of Bluetooth

Image
The man himself     While it doesn't always work perfectly I still appreciate that Bluetooth is this standardized thing that works on all devices. It also has a weird name and a rune for a logo, so you wonder how that came to be. Well, it's named after an ancient Danish king, Harald Bluetooth. King Harald Bluetooth is known in history for uniting the separated tribes in Denmark into one big kingdom. The idea was that when they were developing this wireless technology, they were uniting these separate communication protocols into one. So they wanted to name it Bluetooth. Not at first, though. Bluetooth was an unofficial nickname, they were gonna name it something completely lame like RadioWire or Personal Area Networking. But they couldn't clear the trademarks for those, and I'm glad because it is so much cooler to have a function named after an ancient viking king. That's also where the logo comes from. The bluetooth logo is a combination of the ancient runes for H ...

Lowly Worm is a Perfectly Designed Character

Image
Never once in my life have I read Busytown, nor do I know anything about it. But I have seen Lowly Worm, and I really love this design! I love that he's driving around an apple with wheels. It's a simple idea but it feels clever and is executed nicely. It just looks nice! They should put him in a racing game of some sort.       Here he is, drawn from memory in wigglypaint by yours truly     Here he is in the real world. He can drop you off somewhere. Be your getaway driver, maybe.      Here it looks almost normal apple sized, a little too small maybe. You can take a bite out of it. And then hope that he has car insurance. images: lowly worm lowly worm lowly worm

NEW MITSKI !!!

Image
New Mitski song!!! Finally! I'm so happy!     First impression: It's a song about not wanting to think about things going on in your life, so you want to distract yourself completely. Enter into this state where you're thinking about nothing. It's kinda obvious with the lines " I just want my mind to be a clear glass / Clear glass with nothing in my head." The significance of the phone is that when you don't want to be thinking or doing things, you pick your phone up and start to scroll mindlessly. Could be one of those shortform video platforms, or a microblogging site, and you scroll through it to distract yourself to not have to think about stuff.     There's a line that goes " If night is like you punched a hole into tomorrow / I would fuck the hole all night long." I don't think this is sexual, it's more like "I could kiss you," you know? The night is a hole into tomorrow in that you go to sleep. You fall asleep, ...

I Like the Toy Soldier Scene from Toy Story

Image
Toy Story 1 wasn't just a story about characters that happened to be toys, it also had to be an exploration of the very concept itself: What if your toys were alive? What would it be like, what sorts of things would they do? And I think the toy soldier scene is a great demonstration of this.      Green plastic toy soldiers are a pretty popular toy, I think a lot of kids watching would have had some. They feel timeless. It feeds into the concept, kids can imagine this happening to their own toys. The scene takes something that we're familiar with and presents it from this different, whimsical perspective. It makes a spectacle out of something mundane.      What if your toy soldiers were alive? Well, they might go on a military mission in your house. They might sneak out of your bedroom and into your living room. They might try to gain intel on your birthday presents. And what if they slid down a skipping rope and hid inside your decorati...

The Film That Defends Itself

Image
I watched a film called The Novelist's Film. It's a film about a burnt-out novelist who meets an actress and wants to make a film with her. This description is not a synopsis, it is basically all that happens in the movie. When you read a synopsis, there is an assumed "And then the story unfolds" element to it. You understand that this is the setup, and there's going to be a chain of events that lead to a climax.     What happens in the film is that after meeting with some old colleagues, novelist Jun-hee meets actress Gil-soo in a park, and suddenly gets inspired to write and direct a movie with her in the leading role, and her husband as the love interest. Gil-soo is on board, and Jun-hee tells her to ask her husband about it and get his confirmation. They then have lunch, and then drink together with some colleagues, and that's basically it. We don't even hear his answer.     The thing that makes the film interesting is the fact that it seems to def...

I'm Obsessed with Carabosse

Image
I am obsessed with Carabosse from the 1921 production of The Sleeping Princess ballet. She's also known as "the wicked fairy," who was adapted into the character Maleficent in the Disney film. A while ago, I realized that I do not know what happens in the story of Sleeping Beauty, the fairy tale. I never watched the Disney film as a kid, and it just happened not to be among the fairy tales that I was read. So to remedy that, I decided to look up its Wikipedia page. While there, I saw this illustration of the wicked fairy, and I thought it looked so cool!     I love this design! I especially found the cape striking. It reminds me partially of a butterfly's wings and partially of a volcanic lava pattern. I immediately saved the image to my computer. Upon clicking on it, I learned that it was actually concept art for a costume, designed for a ballet! It was designed by Leon Bakst for the 1921 production of The Sleeping Beauty ballet written by  Tchaikovsky. It was firs...
