Fashionable Futurism

While browsing the internet I heard of the term "gadgetpunk." This didn't happen recently, it was like 3 years ago. It's an aesthetic where people have futuristic gadgets on them, which are often bulky and sometimes wearable. And also accessories like goggles, gloves, charms. Some examples include DragonBall, Digimon, and early Pokémon.

You could also count some stuff from Sonic the Hedgehog in this. Most of all, the human Sonic from Tokyo Game Show. There's actually lore to this image. All of the gadgets on him are supposed to symbolize the interconnectivity that the artist foresees will take hold in gaming. This is from 2001 where online gaming was not as popular as it is today.
This one outfit of Knuckles might also count. Also, fun fact: If you try to find images of knuckles (as in the body part on your hands) on Google, the results will be dominated by Knuckles the Echidna. If you try to be more specific and search "human knuckles" it'll give you humanized versions of Knuckles the Echidna.
There's another Sega game, Jet Set Radio, that has a very strong aesthetic identity. Both its visuals and music are very striking.

I absolutely adore the aesthetics of this game! I think it all comes together in such a cool and stylish way! The character designs, environments, graffiti designs, music, sound design, font choices, everything in it feels so deliberate. In some ways it reminds me of the movie Run Lola Run which is, in my opinion, one of the most stylish films ever made.
So, while thinking of Gadgetpunk and Jet Set Radio, I was reminded of this post I had seen online, about a fashion collection. The outfits in the collection highly resembled the character designs from Jet Set Radio. And they also look pretty sick. It's the AMBUSH Spring / Summer 2023 collection by Yoon Ahn. Check these out:
They look so badass. I love it. The designs are just so good and fun and it's so cool!
I especially like the outfit with the orange skirt. And I love how they're all wearing these massive alien-looking goggles. And they do feel a lot like Jet Set Radio characters. It's as though they were in the video game and then decided to jump out of the screen. Like Fat Albert in the movie Fat Albert (2004).

There's one outfit from the collection that actually looks a lot like Sonic the Hedgehog. Her hair is straight up shaped like Sonic's quills. She has blue makeup on, and she's wearing blue. The bottom of her top is cropped to resemble Sonic's snout shape. And she has those massive shoes, which are like the SOAP shoes. I'm not fully convinced that this was just a coincidence and not intentional.

There's a video of the collection too:

In the video there's this outfit. It's red, white, and black. And the model has arm tattoos and short black hair draped over her face. This sort of reminded me of another character: Faith Mirror's Edge. I LOVE Faith's design. In my opinion she has one of the best and coolest designs of any character. I love the color scheme. I love the asymmetrical features like the eye tattoo, arm tattoo, arm band, red glove. It just gives off this extremely rad impression. Mirror's Edge is another game where, like in Jet Set Radio, every little aspect of the aesthetics just comes together so well and creates something more than the sum of its parts. It is genuinely one of the most visually awe inspiring games. More so than its sequel, even.

I like this design so much that I played as her when I was playing Tony Hawk's Underground. There are no face tattoos in the game so a black monocle had to suffice.

Mirror's Edge is a good game. And, visually, do you know what film resembles it the most? Ultraviolet (2006).

Now, I can't call Ultraviolet a good film. It's bad. It's not particularly well written, or acted, or edited, or special-effects-ed. But I can say one thing: Its aesthetic decisions are OFF THE CHARTS. You can't just write it off as a bad movie, it's a bad movie that looks like THAT.
